9-10 December, 2011
IIASA - Laxenburg, Austria

Organizers:
Tapio Palokangas (IIASA and University of Helsinki)
Alexander Tarasiev (IIASA and IMM UrB RAS)
Jesus Crespo Cuaresma
(IIASA and Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU))

Scientific advisers: Reinhard Mechler, Warren Sanderson

Scope:

  • Modeling economic growth with local and global environmental constraints
  • Optimal economic development with the prospect of environmental catastrophes
  • Biodiversity management in a growing economy

The purpose of the symposium is:

  • to find policy-oriented ways to model the economy and nature as a unified system
  • to establish a basis for cross-cutting efforts on the topic in IIASA
  • to extend the IIASA research network
  • to boost interdisciplinary modeling in IIASA for acute environmental problems (e.g. climate change, catastrophes, biodiversity)
  • to found together with several Universities (preferably in different countries) a research consortium to apply external funding (e.g. from ESF) for extending research on the topic of the conference

The prospective output of the symposium could be a review letter to a scientific journal or a scientific monograph for a good publishing house.
