Ecosystems Services & Management

The IIASA Strategic Plan outlines a new major research program, Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM). This new program is founded on research activities and experience previously covered by the FOR and LUC programs, with the aim of policy oriented applied research and systems analysis, embedded within the Food & Water research domain with strong linkages to Energy & Climate Change and Poverty & Equity.

The ESM Program is focused on understanding the state, ecological thresholds and buffering capacities of ecosystems in a changing world. By using advanced theories of applied systems analysis, new information technologies and integrated biophysical, social and economic modeling techniques, ESM is charting possible pathways to the future by linking ecosystems, society, policy and governance. The strategic goal of ESM includes supporting policy makers in developing rational, realistic and science-based regional, national and global strategies for the production of food, feed, fibre and bio-energy to achieve sustainability of ecosystem services while safeguarding food security and promoting rural development.
