TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

This CD-ROM/web page titled Russian Forests and Forestry was created and tested using Microsoft Internet Expolorer ver. 6.0. All of the data presented on this CD-ROM/web page titled Russian Forests and Forestry is available for download. Data is available under each respective page. The databases available on the CD-ROM are stored as either Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (.xls) or as PDF documents. The .xls files can be imported into various database packages as well as various GIS packages. The data contained in the PDF files is possible to copy and insert into a database with some effort.

The majority of the spatial datasets are in vector format and are stored as Arc/Info shape files. These are most easily imported into ESRI's Arc/Info GIS, however, the majority of other GIS packages provide for the import of Arc/Info data. In addition, ESRI has produced a GIS package titled Arc Explorer, that is available for download free of charge from the ESRI website (www.esri.com). This package provides basic GIS functionality allowing for database queries, mapping etc.

All GIS coverages in the Land Resources of Russia CD-ROM are stored in one of the two following coordinate systems:

Projection: Lambert Azimuthal
Units: Meters
Datum: None
Parameters:
6370997.24063 (radius of the sphere of reference)
100 0 0.000 (longitude of center of projection)
45 0 0.000 (latitude of center of projection)
0.00000 (false easting (meters))
0.00000 (false northing (meters))

Projection: Geographic (Latitude/Longitude)
Units: DD
Datum: None

Data Limitations
Differences will occur between among the spatial datasets found here in terms of resolution and scale. In particular, the outer boundary of Russia, islands and waterbodies may vary between datasets. In addition, geo-registration is sometimes problematic with these datasets. As these datasets are derived from a variety of sources, it was not possible to control consistency.
