The Transport of Air Pollutants in Asia (Model Intercomparison Study -- MICS Asia)
At
the fourth Workshop on the Transport of Air Pollutants in Asia (MICS-Asia)
in October 2001, it was concluded that a further model intercomparison
study would be useful to improve the understanding of the long-range transport
of air pollutants in Asia. While the first phase focused exclusively on
sulfur compounds, it was recognized that a wider perspective including
nitrogen compounds, ozone and aerosols could yield important insights
that are critical for effective control of a variety of environmental
problems. In addition, from the perspective of impact assessment, the
understanding of the atmospheric transport over longer time periods (seasons,
years) will be crucial. The year 2001 was recommended as a target year
for the next model intercomparison. (The conclusions of the fourth meeting
of MICS-Asia are attached to this letter). Announcement
