5th Workshop on
The Transport of Air Pollutants in Asia
(Model Intercomparison Study -- MICS Asia)

January 20-21, 2003 at IIASA, Laxenburg, Austria

At the fourth Workshop on the Transport of Air Pollutants in Asia (MICS-Asia) in October 2001, it was concluded that a further model intercomparison study would be useful to improve the understanding of the long-range transport of air pollutants in Asia. While the first phase focused exclusively on sulfur compounds, it was recognized that a wider perspective including nitrogen compounds, ozone and aerosols could yield important insights that are critical for effective control of a variety of environmental problems. In addition, from the perspective of impact assessment, the understanding of the atmospheric transport over longer time periods (seasons, years) will be crucial. The year 2001 was recommended as a target year for the next model intercomparison. (The conclusions of the fourth meeting of MICS-Asia are attached to this letter).
The next phase of MICS-Asia will focus on sulfur and nitrogen compounds, ozone and aerosols. The fifth workshop in January 2003 will identify participating models and discuss tasks and schedule for the next model intercomparison. A system for implementing the model intercomparison will also be discussed. It is suggested that, as a first step, some episodes in 2001 that are of special interest for gaining insights into important conditions in Asia will be explored. ADORC plans to propose some individual episodes in 2001 based on the availability of EANET monitoring data.
