Research Scholar Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group - Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program
Niklas Hinkel joined the Integrated Biosphere Futures (IBF) Research Group of the Biodiversity and Natural Resources (BNR) Program as a research scholar in July 2021.
Prior to joining IIASA, he worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company and for a boutique consultancy specialized in the energy sector, where he optimized emission neutral energy systems for European countries.
Hinkel holds a diploma (master's equivalent degree) in Latin-American studies from the University of Cologne, Germany. He is currently completing his PhD thesis on quantitative resource and energy economics at the Institute of Energy Economics of the University of Cologne. Besides the estimation of power plant costs, Hinkel's research focus includes technological innovation in the production of maize in Zambia and the interaction of food crops and biofuel in Zambia.
