Guest Research Scholar Exploratory Modeling of Human-natural Systems Research Group - Advancing Systems Analysis Program
Mateusz Iskrzynski studied physics, mathematics and computer science at the College of Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Warsaw. His primary interest was to understand the possible extensions of the experimentally well-established Standard Model of elementary particles. Applying group theory, he classified the leading corrections to the Standard Model interactions, obtaining his master's degree in theoretical particle physics at the University in Warsaw in 2010.
During his PhD studies under the supervision of MikoBaj Misiak, he turned to a specific scenario - the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In his thesis, defended in 2015, he has shown that the theoretical requirements stemming from embedding MSSM in the SU(5) Grand Unified Theory can be reconciled with the observed masses of the Standard Model particles. Parts of his research were conducted at CERN and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology within the "MPD - International PhD projects" programme of the Foundation for Polish Science.
Since then, Dr. Iskrzynski has been carrying out research in the physics of complex systems. In 2016, he studied chemical reaction networks and applications of machine learning to chemical reactions at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Iskrzynski joined IIASA in March 2017, and is working with both the Evolution and Ecology (EEP) and Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) programs as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar. In his current research, he studies the dynamics of ecosystems, investigating the links between the structure of food webs as complex networks and the impacts of species extinction.
