Researcher Integrated Assessment and Climate Change Research Group - Energy, Climate, and Environment Program
Researcher Sustainable Service Systems Research Group - Energy, Climate, and Environment Program
Fabio Sferra joined IIASA as a research assistant in October 2019, and is working in the Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program. He is part of both the Integrated Assessment and Climate Change (IACC) and the Sustainable Service Systems (S3) research groups. His fields of expertise include Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM), downscaling of energy and carbon emissions variables and climate change mitigation.
At IIASA, Mr. Sferra is involved in the H2020 NAVIGATE project, where he leads Task 4.1, focusing on enhancing the regional resolution of IAMs. Under the NAVIGATE project he developed a downscaling algorithm which breaks down the regional Integrated Assessment models (IAMs) results to the national level. This new tool allows for exploring country-level energy transformation and emissions pathways, in line with the long-term goal of the Paris Agreement.
Before joining IIASA, Mr. Sferra was a climate policy analyst at Climate Analytics, where he developed a reduced-complexity energy system model (SIAMESE - Simplified Integrated Assessment Model with Energy System Emulator). The tool has been employed to assess long-term transition pathways in Finland and other European countries (under the H2020 COP21-Ripples project). Before his time at Climate Analytics, Mr. Sferra was a researcher at Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and CMCC (Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici), where he contributed to the development of the WITCH integrated assessment model.
Mr. Sferra holds an MSc in Energy Risk Management from the Bicocca University of Milan, a degree in Economics from Cattolica University of Milan and he is currently a PhD candidate at the Technische Universitat Wien.
