The Lighthouse Activity Awards for 2014 were announced on 25 November 2014, and the award ceremony will take place at the COP20 meeting in Lima, Peru in December, where IIASA's scientific lead for the project, Reinhard Mechler, will be present. The award highlights projects that provide practical ideas for addressing climate change.
The Zurich Flood Resilience Program is a multi-year cooperation between IIASA researchers, Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center (Wharton) in the United States, Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich), Practical Action, and the International Federation Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The program received an award in the category of ‘Financing for Climate Friendly Investments, which underscores the new type of collaboration exemplified by the program, which brings together research, insurance expertise, and community-based disaster risk management.
About the awards
The Lighthouse Activity Awards are spearheaded by the UN Climate Change secretariat to shine a light on some of the best examples of climate solutions to inspire increased climate action around the world. This year’s winning activities include both large, game-changing solutions and small, entrepreneurial efforts.
“These activities are assisting communities, cities, businesses, governments and institutions to move towards a low-carbon, highly resilient future,” UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres said. “The 2014 Lighthouse Activities show that action on climate change is not only possible but that it is already happening – injecting confidence into the global movement towards a universal climate change agreement in Paris in 2015.”
