Arctic Futures Initiative (AFI) – Extended Core Group Meeting with IIASA Experts

IIASA Arctic Futures Initiative (AFI) held an Extended Core Group Meeting including a consulting session with the IIASA Programs and business meetings.

The AFI Core Group is a smaller group, the “action tool” of the AFI Advisory Board, currently comprising of the three co-chairs and four members of the AFI Advisory Board.  The Advisory Board currently consists of eleven members representing a variety of stakeholders.

AFI Core Group meetings are held every six months in the 2-year planning phase of AFI. The purpose of the meeting was, in addition to the business meeting, to meet with IIASA Program's experts. The business meeting reviews previous advisory meetings’ outcomes and conclusions; update priorities, tasks, goals, timeline for AFI; update concept document and AFI presentation; plan for larger meeting 1-3 December 2015, review status of Advisory Board memberships.

The IIASA Programs play a key role in co-design and joint planning of this IIASA Futures Initiative in its planning phase. The wide and deep expertise of the programs on integrative and cross-disciplinary methodology and issues of global concern, are of vital importance for the AFI focusing on the Arctic region critical for global developments in many ways. IIASA Program Directors Elena Rovenskaya (Advanced Systems Analysis, ASA), Michael Obersteiner (Ecosystem Services and Management, ESM), Ulf Dieckmann (Evolution and Ecology, EEP), and Mia Landauer of behalf of Joanne Linnerooth-Bayer (Risk Policy and Vulnerability, RPV) presented their programs and list of priorities and methodology for Arctic research.

During the second day business meeting, the participants discussed, reviewed and updated the AFI goals and objectives, niche, domain, key themes and research questions, collaboration with international organizations, research projects and programs, for example.

The next Core Group meeting is organized 10-11 September at IIASA.
