The theme of EKC 2019 is "Science, Technology, and Humanity: Advancement and Sustainability" and it will aim at helping to tackle issues surrounding environmental destruction, climate change and social crises that are currently being faced.

The conference will focus on how humankind can continue to acquire sustainability while advancing in the fields of science and technology and to discuss the role of social science in collaboration with science and technology.

The event will consist of plenary and keynote addresses; multilateral programs; science and technology discussions; industrial forums; networking programs; and exhibition space where IIASA will also host a stand. Its participants will include government policymakers, academic scholars and professors and industrial professionals.

A large Korean delegation, which arrived in Vienna for this conference, also payed a visit to IIASA to discuss strengthening of scientific cooperation between Korea and IIASA.

Demography, human capital and sustainable development

Wolfgang Lutz, Program Director of the IIASA World Population Program, will give a plenary address at the conference, during its official opening on 17 July 2019. His talk will show how multi-dimensional demographic models can help to analyze and forecast social and economic change through the replacement of generations with different characteristics and in particular different levels of education (demographic metabolism) and which challenges and opportunities this brings about. It will focus on examples from Europe and East Asia and will study the role of human capital (populations by age, health and level of education) in helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. It will cover a 200-year perspective from 1900 to 2100 along different possible scenarios of socio-economic change.

Special session on particulate matter and climate change

Gregor Kiesewetter, Research Scholar in the IIASA Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases Program, will participate as a panel member in the special session on particulate matter and climate change which will take place on 18 July 2019. The session is designed to tackle the important environmental issue that is air pollution and its effects on health. Including consistent associations between concentrations of particulate matter and adverse effects on human health at concentrations commonly encountered in Europe and Asia.

Special session on urban heat wave

Jihoon Min, Research Scholar in the IIASA Energy Program, will be moderating the special session on urban heatwave which will take place on the 18 July 2019. The session will focus on the devastating impacts heatwaves have on our societies, in particular, human health, quality of life, and social infrastructure. Climate projections suggest more frequent and intense heat waves due to anthropogenic global warming, and ongoing urbanisation further aggravates the impact regionally. Climate actions and planning of cities, therefore, should consider ways of reducing heat waves and adaptation. In this session, they will discuss, current issues and problems on heat waves; global climate change and future extreme events; urbanisation and heat stress to human bodies; policies and regulations to reduce heat waves.

IIASA and Korea

Since the Republic of Korea’s (Korea) membership of IIASA began in 2008, a range of research collaborations and capacity building activities have been developed by IIASA and it's Korean research partners.

Studies have explored green growth in Korea, global water challenges, and how to increase Korea’s resilience to extreme events among a range of other topics. Most of the research has also advanced Korean capacity to use and develop the tools of systems analysis such as building a Korean version of IIASA’s GAINS model that has helped governments across the globe to cut air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the most cost-effective manner.
