COVID-19 has provided us with opportunities to review strategies within a context of uncertainty, accelerate social and behavioral change, and bring about transformations very different in scope and scale to those we may have previously envisaged. In May 2020 IIASA and ISC partnered to draw on their combined strengths and expertise to define and design pathways that will enable building-back a more sustainable post COVID-19 world.

From June to September 2020 over 200 scientists, policymakers, and representatives from civil society participated in online consultations as part of the IIASA-ISC Consultative Science Platform. As the world grapples with how to re-start stalled economies, rebuild societies, bring ‘normalcy’ to our lives, protect our environment, and enhance resilience to various future threats, these consultations have identified a set of insights and key areas for transformative action.

In this seminar,  part of the Payne Institute Fall Webinar Series, Leena Srivastava will outline key findings of the IIASA-ISC partnership and will describe how the process helped identify potential areas for transformation and highlight potential partnerships going forward that may facilitate realization.

This event will take place virtually.

The seminar will be co-hosted by Greer Gosnell, Senior Researcher at the Payne Institute for Public Policy and Colorado School of Mine and Morgan Bazilian, Director of the Payne Institute, professor of Public Policy, Division of Economics and Business, who were participants of the Sustainable Energy consultation theme of the IIASA-ISC Consultative Science Platform.

The key messages derived from the IIASA-ISC partnership have been presented to large audiences at several international conferences including the recent side event in the margin of the UN General Assembly on 29 September highlighting how to operationalize a sustainable and equitable new normal and the 2020 Borlaug Dialogue by the World Food Prize on 13 October specifically focusing on building resilient food systems post COVID-19.
