Ambassador of Vietnam visits IIASA

Ambassador Nguyen met with IIASA Director General Albert van Jaarsveld on 18 August 2021 to discuss the IIASA research agenda and ways to further strengthen  the research collaboration between IIASA and Vietnam.

Vietnam joined IIASA in 2013 with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) representing Vietnam’s scholarly community as the IIASA National Member Organization. Since then, IIASA has established partnership relations with over 13 Vietnamese institutions which has resulted in numerous joint research publications.

One of main topics of discussions focused on the  IIASA-VAST project: Greenhouse gas-Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies (GAINS) Vietnam. The GAINS Vietnam model explores cost-effective multipollutant emission control strategies, minimizing their negative effects on human health, ecosystems and climate change. Its aim is to develop the scientific infrastructure for a long-lasting science-policy interface for air quality management in Vietnam.

IIASA also contributes to systems analysis capacity development activities in its NMO countries. IIASA trainings on the use of the Catastrophe Simulation Model ( (CatSim) and the Community Water Model (CWatM) which assesses integrated water resources management, are currently taking place or planned to take place in Vietnam this year.

Ambassador Nguyen was accompanied by Mr. Tran Viet Phuong, Second Secretary, Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna. From IIASA Iain Stewart, Head of the Communications and External Relations Department, and Sergey Sizov, IIASA Science Diplomacy Officer, participated in the meeting.
