IIASA expands international postdoc opportunities

IIASA is pleased to announce new fellowships, expanding the institute’s research opportunities for early-career scientists. In 2017, the institute is welcoming six new postdoctoral fellows from Brazil, Korea, and Mexico. In addition, Brazil is funding three PhD students to conduct up to nine months of research at IIASA. The successful candidates will work in IIASA research programs on topics ranging from water resources and energy access to network analysis and big data.  

The new fellowships are funded by IIASA National Member Organizations (NMOs) in three countries: Brazil’s Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education is funding 2 postdocs and 3 PhD students; the Republic of Korea's National Research Foundation is funding one postdoc; and the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology will fund three postdocs. Complementing the IIASA Postdoctoral Program, similar nationally funded postdoc fellowships already exist for Finland and Sweden. These new partnerships are allowing the institute to expand the number of postdoctoral researchers and further international research collaborations. 

The fellowships offer unique international and interdisciplinary research experiences for early-career scientists. IIASA postdocs have the opportunity to develop their system-analytical skills and to forge new international contacts and collaborations—many of which prove to be instrumental throughout their entire career. 

2017 NMO-funded postdocs

• Claudio Tadeu Cristino, from Brazil, will join the Advanced Systems Analysis Program, where he will work on the modeling of cancer treatments and outcomes. 
• Julian David Hunt, from Brazil, will work on seasonally pumped water storage and its benefits to the Brazilian water and energy systems, as part of the IIASA Water Program. 
• Valeria Javalera Rincon, from Mexico, will work on a project related to the optimal distribution of resources in large-scale systems, in collaboration with the Advanced Systems Analysis and Ecosystems Services and Management programs.  
• Chulwook Park, from the Republic of Korea, will work on the evolutionary origin of cognitive biases in human behavior as part of the Evolution and Ecology Program. 
• Katya Pérez-Guzman, from Mexico, will conduct a network analysis of carbon inputs and outputs in Brazil and Mexico. She will join the Advanced Systems Analysis Program.  
• Isela-Elizabeth Téllez-León, from Mexico, will work on network-based modeling and big data as part of the IIASA cross-cutting project System Risk and Network Dynamics. She will work with three IIASA research programs: Advanced Systems Analysis, Evolution and Ecology, and Risk and Resilience.

PhD students

Three PhD students from Brazil will join IIASA research programs for up to nine months in 2017. The successful candidates are Rafael Cancella Morais (Energy Program), Vágna da Costa Pereira (Ecosystems Services and Management Program), and Luís Gustavo Tudeschini (Energy Program).
