The Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program (SA-YSSP) is a new program which will bring advanced PhD students to the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa from December 2012 to February 2013, to carry out collaborative research projects on a variety of topics including climate change, food security, air pollution, ecosystems, and evolution.

The young scientists represent twenty nationalities, currently living in 12 different countries.  Thirteen supervisory teams, each a scientific partnership between IIASA and South African researchers, will oversee the research projects that were developed jointly with each young scientist.

IIASA Director & CEO Pavel Kabat will join the South African Minister of Science and Technology Derek Hanekom at the launch of the SA-YSSP on 2 December.

The SA-YSSP is organized jointly by the South African National Research Foundation, the Republic of South Africa Department of Science and Technology, the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, and IIASA.
