IIASA’s postdoctoral fellowship program now sponsors 4 researchers per year, to conduct their own research within one of IIASA’s research programs or special projects. Candidates develop and submit a research proposal that interfaces their own research interests with the research agenda of one of the various activities pursued at IIASA.

For more information about the program, or to submit an application, please visit the IIASA postdoctoral program Web page.

Applications are now open year-round, and the next deadline will be 1 December, 2013.

Chandi Witharana, originally from Sri Lanka, joins IIASA’s Risk, Policy, and Vulnerability (RPV) and Ecosystem Services and Management (ESM) programs after finishing his PhD at the University of Connecticut in USA. His dissertation examined integral segments of routing Earth observation (EO) based rapid-mapping workflows to understand prevailing deficiencies and to devise novel approaches to catalyze conditioned geoinformation delivery to facilitate increasing user demand. At IIASA, Chandi’s research will be primarily aligned with the RPV’s ongoing project entitled ‘Scientific Insight for Building Long Term Flood Resilience: Devising incentive-based and equitable flood risk management portfolios’. He will closely examine the connection between EO elements and insurance issues and explore intelligent ways to integrate advanced EO technology into disaster risk financing mechanisms

Carl Salk, originally from the United States, joins the Ecosystem Services and Management (ESM) program at IIASA from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  Crowdsourcing is a tool for coordinating volunteer efforts to solve problems that are intractable by other means.  Salk will use the ESM program's GeoWiki geographical crowdsourcing tool to generate better land cover maps at different scales.  These maps will in turn be used to address a variety of problems, such as how much land is available for different human needs to how natural resource users cooperate to manage ecosystems.
