Career Development for Scientists

Young Scientists

The annual IIASA three-month Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) offers research opportunities to talented early stage researchers whose interests correspond with the ongoing research by IIASA on issues of global environmental, economic, and social change. Each year, from June through August, accepted participants work within the institute’s research programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff. Each year two or three participants of the YSSP receive an Award that provides them with the opportunity to return to IIASA for an additional three months of research.

Research Assistants

Research Assistants at IIASA have generally completed a master’s degree (or equivalent)
in a natural science field within the previous 24 months, and are working toward an
advanced degree (PhD or equivalent). Primarily, Research Assistants conduct research and provide support to senior researchers at the institute. Typically, our Research Assistants are offered an initial fixed-term appointment of 12 months with the possibility of extension.

Postdoctoral Research Scholars

Postdoctoral scholars at IIASA have the opportunity to work closely with scientists from their own and other disciplines to broaden and strengthen their research interests and gain work experience within a lively and close-knit community. Every year a number of postdoctoral scholarships are available for research on topics related to the IIASA research agenda.

Research Scholars

Research Scholars at IIASA are generally holders of an advanced university degree (PhD or equivalent) in a natural science field. Holders of these posts have proven analytical skills and
experience of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Typically, our Research Scholars are offered an initial fixed-term appointment of 12 months with the possibility of extension.
