In November 2018, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) organized a round table on the ratio between security issues and cooperation within interaction of states in the Arctic region.

Lassi Heininen, Professor at University of Lapland, Senior Research Scholar at IIASA, and AFI Core Group chair, gave a keynote report at the event. The event was mediated by Timur Makhmutov, RIAC Deputy Director of Programs and AFI Core Group member. The event participants included representatives of analytical centers dealing with Arctic issues, also AFI Core Group member Alexander Pelyasov.

The lively discussion included the impact of climate change on the interaction of states in the Arctic, the development of new mechanisms for intergovernmental relations based on the experience of Arctic cooperation, prospects for the development of national sovereignty of the Arctic states in the context of increasing globalization, and increasing interest of non-regional players in international projects in the Arctic.
