ECSA General Assembly 2017 and LandSense User Requirements Workshop

IIASA will host the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) General Assembly 2017 and the User Requirements and Engagement Workshop for the pioneering H2020 project - LandSense.

On January 25th, 2017, IIASA will host the ECSA General Assembly. ECSA is a non-profit association set up to stimulate the growth of the Citizen Science movement in Europe. It draws from 200 individual and organizational members from over 28 countries across the European Union and beyond.

On January 26th, 2017, IIASA and ECSA are co-organizing a User Requirements Workshop for the pioneering H2020 LandSense (@LandSense) project.

The event will bring together project partners as well as key stakeholders to discuss user requirements and co-design engagement strategies for new citizen-powered initiatives. The workshop will involve interactive sessions that address the main technical, economic, and cultural barriers to the LandSense Citizen Observatory. Participants will get a chance to try out LandSense-related technologies, learn about the LandSense demonstration cases and meet a community of partners across Europe driving citizen science.

LandSense will build an innovative citizen observatory in the field of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC), which collects data both actively (through citizens) and passively (from authoritative and open access sources) and integrates them to provide valuable quality-assured in-situ data for multiple sectors. There is currently no single marketplace that brings together the growing demand for in-situ data for the monitoring of land use. LandSense will build such a marketplace to attract a vast community of users across numerous disciplines and sectors and thereby boost Europe’s role in the business of in-situ monitoring. LandSense will also provide multiple pathways for citizen empowerment that go beyond simple data collection by providing a range of engagement tools that will allow the voices of citizens to be heard.
