IEA Bioenergy was set up by the International Energy Agency (IEA) with the aim of improving cooperation and information exchange between countries that have national programmes in bioenergy research, development and deployment.

The work of IEA Bioenergy is structured in a number of Tasks, which have well defined objectives, budgets, and time frames (see below for more information). Each Task is led by one of the participating countries and have a common duration of three years.

IIASA’s CLR Centre Head and Deputy ESM Program Director Florian Kraxner provided an invited lecture on IBFRA, the IBFRA Insight Process, and IIASA activities with respect to sustainable bioenergy systems for all IEA Bioenergy tasks participating in the meeting entitled – IIASA, IBFRA and Cool forests.

Potential future inter-task collaborations concerning negative emissions technologies, namely Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Sequestration (BECCS), were one of the focus areas of discussion at this kick-off event for tasks 40 – 45. Especially regarding the prospects, opportunities and challenges pertaining to near- to medium term deployment of BECCS/ or Utilization solutions in the IEA countries.

IEA Bioenergy has a key role to play when it comes to building and disseminating knowledge on how bioenergy can best contribute to meeting the momentous challenge of climate change and of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The CLR group is very much looking forward to potential future collaborations.
