The conference is devoted to the 75-year anniversary of the V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forests, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS).

The conference covers a broad range of topics such as

  • biodiversity and the biospheric role of forest ecosystems
  • dynamics and monitoring of forest ecosystems
  • anthropogenic and natural risks of forest ecosystems vulnerability
  • tree breeding, genetic and genomic research of boreal forests
  • biotechnology and value-added processing of forest products
  • forest resources and forest management

ESM-CLR participates in this conference with a suite of individual presentations and as session and panel organizer:

  • Florian Kraxner (Conference Scientific Committee member ): “Negative Emissions – the challenge of increasing the carbon sink through afforestation, reforestation and restoration on the northern hemisphere – case study Eurasia”
  • Florian Kraxner: Plenary Panel: “Transition to Sustainable Forest Management in Northern Eurasia - Challenges and Realities”
  • Dmitry Schepaschenko: “Refining of the system of standards for evaluating the carbon budget of Russian forests”
  • Anatoly Shvidenko (Conference Scientific Committee member): “Carbon Budget of Forests as an Underspecified (fuzzy) System”
  • Anatoly Shvidenko: Plenary Panel: “Ways of transition to risk-resilient forest management”

In addition, IIASA and IBFRA together with the Institute of Forest of the Russian Federal Forest Service, hosted a problem oriented plenary session on “A system approach to the assessment of the carbon cycle at the national / regional level” on 27 August, chaired by Florian Kraxner and a round table on “Principles of sustainable forest management”, moderated by Anatoly Shvidenko.

IIASA CLR head Florian Kraxner co-hosted the conference, also as a representative of IBFRA as the research organizations current president. The conference will be followed by a series of bilateral meetings with local institutions, where, together with his team Dr. Kraxner will provide the latest status of research results from IIASA and IBFRA, such as the IBFRA insight process. Furthermore, they will discuss new research opportunities as well as ongoing project work with research collaboration partners from the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Forest SB RAS, V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest SB RAS, the Russian Federal Forest Service and the Administration of the Krasnoyarsk Kray of the Siberian Federal University SFU.
