Speciation is the process by which one species evolves into two differentiated ones which can no longer interbreed. Sympatric speciation is the case when the differentiation process occurs within the range of dispersal of the species, and therefore it implies coexistence of the newly arising species. We are interested in the interaction between space and sympatric speciation, namely, in the conditions for local vs. global coexistence and how they affect the speciation process in a spatially explicit model.
