The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) is a unique event in the world of business and economics. Since 2006, it has been held under the auspices of the President of the Russian Federation, who has also attended each event. Over the last 21 years, the Forum has become a leading global platform for members of the business community to meet and discuss the key economic issues facing Russia, emerging markets, and the world as a whole.
As leading expert on aging and demography in Russia, Sergei Scherbov is invited speaker at this conference. He will participate in the panel discussion entitled "Demography as a factor in global politics: Current trends" on 8 June at 12pm, at Congress Centre, Conference Hall D4.
The panel session discusses demographic problems that go beyond birth and mortality rates. Population replacement, changes in its structure, the increase in life expectancy, and migration are becoming fundamental issues in the development strategies of most countries. Non-standard and systemic solutions are moving to centre stage. Panel members will discuss questions including: What kind of opportunities are opening up due to the fact that the population is ageing, and how can high growth rates be maintained; What measures can boost the birth rate and reduce poverty; and how much can supporting women increase economic activity in general?
