The role of education as a determinant of sustainable development has been a main focus of interdisciplinary research at IIASA over the last decade. In this presentation we provide a systematic account of the scientific results produced at IIASA concerning the role of human capital as a driving force of income growth and institutional change, with an emphasis on the interaction between demographic change and education expansions at a global level. We summarize how the research conducted at IIASA on the topic of human capital and development can inform policymakers and other researchers in the framework of the assessment of environmentally sustainable development policy.
