Dialogue On Air

Dr. Markus Amann, Program Director of the Air Quality and Greenhouse Program (AIR) and Dr. Pallav Purohit, researcher from the AIR program will present the results of the study jointly carried out with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) of India. 

The report on "Pathways to Achieve National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) in India" will be presented at the inaugural edition of the CEEW dialogue "On Air". The dialogues will feature conversations with scientists, policymakers, researchers, civil society experts, communication specialists, journalists, and on-ground actors supporting India’s transition towards cleaner air.

Exposure to ambient particulate matter is a leading risk factor for environmental public health in India. While Indian authorities implemented several measures to reduce emissions from the power, industry and transportation sectors over the last years, such strategies appear to be insufficient to reduce the ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) concentration below the Indian National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 40 μg/m³ across the country. The findings presented in this report explore several mitigation pathways towards achieving the NAAQS in India in the context of the dynamics of social and economic development.

The dialogue will include discussion on the impact of crop-residue burning on air quality and will also cover uncertainties in emissions inventories in the context of Delhi's air pollution.
