There are four main research activities planned for 2014 by the Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program's Environmental Resources and Development (ERD) group.

1. ILUC project for the European Commission

The European Commission has commissioned a consortium of Ecofys, IIASA, and E4tech to provide a new assessment of the indirect effect land use change of European biofuel policies. ESM is heading up the modeling part using the GLOBIOM model. This work includes substantial involvement of stakeholders both from industry and from NGOs. Results will be released in early 2015.

2. OECD agricultural futures

GLOBIOM, with three other economic models, is part of an OECD exercise looking at long-term scenarios for global agriculture. The project includes a consultation phase for delegations of OECD countries to design a future vision plus policy scenarios. The scenarios will be later quantified by the modeling teams to provide policy options to 2050.

3. Modeling future land use change in the tropics

After two years of refining the GLOBIOM model to integrate local data and knowledge, GLOBIOM will be used to assess the impact of current and future policies on deforestation and biodiversity in Brazil and in the Congo Basin. Through the IIASA Tropical Flagship Initiative, ESM researchers will also be responsible for adapting the model to Indonesia and for building local capacities in land use change modelling. Several workshops will be held in all three countries to strengthen collaboration with policymakers.

4. Accounting for socioeconomic heterogeneity in IIASA models

ESM will participate in an IIASA cross-cutting activity aimed at better representing socioeconomic heterogeneity. The GLOBIOM model will be refined for projections of food demand, taking into account how population education, aging, and income can shape future food requirements. This project will take place in collaboration with other IIASA programs.
