1. Precision forestry for the future - enhanced forest management by optimized tree selection in thinning operations

This project aims to enhance the productivity and the sustainability of the forest sector by improving thinning and harvesting operations, based on novel remote sensing methods and a spatially explicit stand-level forest model. The research team includes scientists from IIASA, Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU) in Sweden, and Australia, who will interact with major stakeholders from the Swedish forest industry.

Department of Forest Resource Management, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,  Umeå, Sweden;  Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Alnarp, Sweden; Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, NSW, Australia.

2. Future Forests project

During 2014, ESM will continue its in-depth collaboration in the Future Forests research project, a multi-disciplinary research program aiming to provide knowledge to increase a sustainable provision of ecosystem services from Swedish forests. Within the framework of this project, ESM will analyze consequences of alternative Swedish forest use strategies on the Swedish forest sector’s future position in Europe and globally.
