Land classification and governance

Carl Salk first came to IIASA through the Young Scientists Summer Program in 2010, winning the Peccei Award for his work on how climate change will alter the carbon balance of temperate forests.

He returned to the Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program in 2011 to carry out further research under the Peccei Award.

Since 2012 he has been working with two IIASA programs. In ESM, he has been developing statistical tools to compare land classification error rates on maps with different cover categories in conjunction with Steffen Fritz and Linda See.

In RPV he has been collaborating with Jan Sendzimir on protocol development for a United States National Science Foundation-funded project on the emergence of adaptive governance arrangements for tropical forest ecosystems.

Dr. Salk's work in 2013 led to the publication of a paper on Comparing forests across climates and biomes: Qualitative assessments, reference forests and regional intercomparisons, which he lead-authored.
