The development of diplomatic relations with leaders of science and government played an important part in the life of IIASA in 2013.

Diplomatic relations with Italy, Mexico, and Vietnam were strengthened in 2013 with a view to further collaboration with IIASA in the future.

Director General, Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat met with leaders of National Member Organizations (NMOs) of China and Ukraine. He also received a delegation of leaders from the Russian oil and gas industry.

European-wide contacts were high on the agenda. The Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission met IIASA scientific staff, while a delegation of European Heads of Mission visited IIASA to talk about European and international policies.

Discussions on collaboration between IIASA and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) were also initiated in 2013.

EU Member Countries’ Ambassadors visit IIASA

European Union Heads of Mission accredited to the United Nations and Ambassador Mara Marinaki, Managing Director, Global and Multilateral Issues Department, European External Action Service, visited IIASA today to discuss European and international policies and to learn about IIASA’s policy-relevant research in climate, energy, food, water, and the environment. On 19 – 21 February, IIASA Director and CEO, Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat travelled to Washington DC, to hold discussions with US and international stakeholders and highlight IIASA's new flagship project on World Water Futures. More

China broadens collaboration with IIASA 

On 8 April, IIASA Director and CEO, Professor Dr Pavel Kabat, and his special advisor Mr Chin Min Lee travelled to China to have high level meetings to discuss future collaborations with IIASA. More

On 10-12 April, IIASA Director and CEO, Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat, Deputy Director Nebojsa Nakicenovic and special advisor Mr. Chin Min Lee visited Mexico to discuss potential collaboration opportunities including membership opportunities and re-launching of a postdoctoral fellowship. More
