Ukraine visit highlights systems science

A recent visit to Kiev, Ukraine by IIASA Director/CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat highlighted the importance of systems science for policymakers.

On 23 April, IIASA Director/CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat and IIASA Secretary Margaret Goud Collins traveled to Kiev, Ukraine, where they met with Ukrainian research leaders to discuss new and ongoing collaborations. IIASA collaborates with Ukraine on research ranging from land use and forestry to climate, biomass, and air quality, and many projects that intersect these areas.

During his visit, Kabat gave a public keynote lecture at the Ukrainian Festival of Science, entitled “Systems Science for Policy Support.” During the festival, Kabat was awarded an honorary doctorate from the National Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine (NASU).  NASU has been the National Member Organization (NMO) for Ukraine since it gained IIASA membership in 1994.

Kabat met with NASU President Boris Paton and eight other leading scholars from the NMO to discuss new and ongoing cooperation between the Academy and IIASA. They discussed Ukrainian participation in IIASA’s new World Water Scenarios initiative, and NASU presented Professor Kabat with a copy of a new book entitled Integrated Modeling of Food, Energy and Water Security Management for Sustainable Social, Economic and Environmental Developments, which resulted from an ongoing collaborative project.

Kabat also met with Professor Volodymyr Semynozhenko, Head of the State Agency on Science, Innovations and Information Policy of Ukraine, accompanied by the NASU Vice-President Anatoly Zagorodny.  The leaders agreeed to strengthen and broaden the governmental support for Ukrainian cooperation with IIASA. In particular the two leaders discussed collaboration on the proposed Eurasian Economic Space study.
