In 2018 the IIASA council passed a resolution to co-host a series of regional conferences to foster dialogue between research and policy communities focused on addressing societal challenges. These conferences will explore the role of systems analysis in addressing regional and societal challenges and provide input into the strategic and research direction of IIASA.
The first of these conferences was the Americas regional conference co-hosted by IIASA, CAPES, the US National Academies of Sciences, and the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Countries in this region face challenges including the competition for natural resources, political instability, transboundary issues, increasing economic inequalities, and the need for effective sustainability strategies, the conference took place in Rio de Janeiro in September 2019.
The second conference was the African regional conference, co-hosted by IIASA, the National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa, and the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT). The conference leveraged both the African Continent’s and IIASA expertise in systems analysis methodologies to discuss and analyze transformative approaches aimed at increasing the impact and effectiveness of its investments and took place in Pretoria, South Africa in December 2019.
The third conference will be the Eurasian Regional conference co-hosted by IIASA and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), the Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA), National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS), the Finnish Committee for IIASA, the Systems Analysis Committee of the RAS and the Geophysical Center of the RAS, and will take place in Moscow in April 2021.
