28 February 2013
Accompanied by U.S. NMO Committee Chair Professor Donald Saari and IIASA Secretary Dr. Margaret Goud Collins, Kabat met with Dr. John Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and with Dr. Subra Suresh, Director of the National Science Foundation, to discuss U.S. interests and opportunities for cooperation in IIASA’s most recent research and policy initiatives, particularly the recently launched World Water Scenarios Initiative. Kabat also presented the new initiative to the 18th UN-Water meeting at the World Bank headquarters on 19 February, and explored opportunities for cooperation and collaboration with the initiative at a series of meetings and seminars with policy makers and researchers at U.S. and international agencies and organizations. These included the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the U.S. Water Partnership.
The World Water Scenarios initiative was launched at the beginning of February 2013 and aims to assess the current and future states of water resources around the world and the options that we have for managing water-related challenges. The initiative started through a partnership of IIASA, UNESCO, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Korea, the World Water Council, and the International Water Association, and continues to add new partners. It aims to provide a scientific basis for responding to worldwide water challenges by testing possible optional solutions against a number of scenarios for socio-economic change, and bring together decision makers to discuss a common vision for the future.
