WAT applies advanced systems analysis to support the identification and assessment of sets of robust strategies, technologies, and solutions, across sectors and scales, to enable science-based policy formulation and informed decision making. Quantified scenarios are used to explore how different water management policies may affect development in the face of increasing uncertainty and growing complexity of water challenges.

WAT convenes international, interdisciplinary research on possible water futures and their interactions and implications across the climate-water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus, to help identify robust and sustainable options. The Water Futures and Solutions initiative, at the heart of WAT, aims to become the scientific basis for the Sustainable Development Goal 6—to ensure clean water and sanitation for all.
