SOCIO-ECONOMY

Socio-Economic LandscapesAt the beginning of the third millennium, Russia is facing the challenge of rebuilding its economy and society. The transition toward a new socioeconomy is difficult over such a vast area encompassing a diversity of natural conditions. It is a major effort to both change peoples' attitudes and to reorient the centrally planned economy toward a market-based economy. The problems become even more complicated if one takes into account that each country contains individual economic peculiarities and social behavior. There is no common socioeconomic model or goal that can be recommended for all nations. The features that best match Russia are still being debated; proper answers have not yet been found. The socioeconomic data presented in this CD-ROM characterize the transitional period from two perspectives:

• The period from 1987 to 1993, which mainly provides an understanding of Russia before reconstruction time. This portion of information is captured by the GOSKOMSTAT database.

• The period starting in 1998 and continuing later, which presents a picture of present-day conditions. This information comes from the Forest and Land State Accounts and is provided in a description of administrative oblasts.

These two time points illustrate well the transition trends and allow conclusions to be drawn based on analysis and expertise.
