Nine ESM researchers spoke at the IUFRO World Congress, highlighting how forest science is helping address significant environmental, social, and economic challenges facing our world. The scientists presented their latest research in 15 talks and posters and also contributed to a series of technical sessions and side events coorganized by IIASA.

ESM Deputy Director, Florian Kraxner, organized sessions on “International to Local Forest Governance: Taking Stock of Theories, Methodologies and Findings” and “Addressing The Drivers Of Deforestation: Exploring Synergies between REDD+ and Forest Policy” featuring REDD-PAC and results from the IIASA Tropical Futures Initiative. He also organized a session on global and regional deployment of biomass and carbon capture and storage (BECCS): Reconciling top-down and bottom-up approaches and REDD+/BECCS nexus.”

The IIASA events attracted a large international audience and steered scientific discussion with experts, country negotiators from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (e.g., Brazil), and a broad basis of interested stakeholders in the forest sector.

The BeWhere Model was also widely featured. The ecological-economic tradeoffs of renewable energy production and biodiversity conservation in the Alps, part of the work done under the recharge.green project was presented by Sabine Fuss.

Karthikeyan Natarajan of the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu, presented the latest results on the BeWhere Finland model on the location of biomass-based bio-energy production plants in Finland, including where feedstock competition exists with forest industries.
