Flood resilience management

In 2014 the Water (WAT) program collaborated with the Risk, Policy and Vulnerability (RPV) Program, and the Zurich Flood Resilience Program on a project to enhance community flood resilience.

Within the Flood Resilience Project, the Water (WAT) Program has a number of roles:

  1. to develop and apply flood resilience frameworks supporting interactions with stakeholders in case studies and performing qualitative data analysis
  2. applying the framework to identify risk management patterns
  3. developing flood resilience simulations games and policy exercises
  4. identifying and assessing flood vulnerability indicators and hotspots
  5. assessing uncertainties in indicators and the hydrologic modeling of extremes by studying variability with multi-model ensembles
  6. producing scenarios of flood risk and adaptation
  7. assessing impacts of options to improve flood resilience

In 2014 WAT helped developed flood resilience frameworks, collected flood risk and inundation maps, developed water scenarios, and analyzed runoff variability into the future from multiple hydrologic models to identify changing risk hotspots and uncertainties.

These activities laid the groundwork for tools that can determine rating curves to help determine flood hazard, exposure, and vulnerability under various scenarios and intervention options.
