Policy relevance in 2013

Brian Fath was chair of the Baltimore County Commission on Environmental Quality in 2013.  He led the Commission making policy recommendations to the County Council; recommendations were related to ground water pollution due to the application of road salt and to increasing tree canopy cover in the county. 

Leena Ilmola-Sheppard was one of four experts of the Finnish Government’ Futures Resolution project which resulted in the Government’s Resolution for Parliamentary Procession on Finnish Futures in 2030. She was also an expert adviser to the Finnish Parliament (Futures Committee) in the project “Futures of Welfare Society 2030” which will be published, with her contribution, in February 2014.

Arkady Kryazhimskiy coordinated the research program “Prospects of Coordinated Socio-economic Development of Russia and Ukraine in a European Context” supported by the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2012-2013) and co-organized the 2^nd Conference “Prospects of Coordinated Socio-economic Development of Russia and Ukraine in a European Context”, in Moscow on 14-15 November 2013, where representatives of the scientific, expert and policy communities of Russia and Ukraine discussed possible scenarios for development of economic relations of the two countries in the coming years.

Stefan Thurner discussed his results on managing systemic risks in financial networks with representatives of national and international central banks. His work generated much media attention, with about 90 mentions in the international press, radio and TV in 2013. 

Three ASA projects generated direct policy impact. The FP7-funded project “Energy Efficiency and Risk Management in Public Buildings (EnRiMa)” (2010-2014, Yuri Ermoliev and Marek Makowski) contributed to supporting energy managers of public buildings in their decision-making facing objectives of end-use efficiency and energy saving. The Decision Support System developed was installed for use by actual decision-makers in test sites in Austria and Spain.

The results of the project “Structural change of the Finnish Economy – a Systems Approach” (2012-2013, Leena Ilmola, Elena Rovenskaya, Victoria Veshchinskaya, Nikita Strelkovskiy) funded by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy were used as an input to policy recommendations for the structural transition of Finnish industries.

The project on Eurasian economic integration (Peter Havlik, Elena Rovenskaya, Leena Ilmola) deals with the issue of benefits and costs of possible scenarios of economic integration between Russia, its neighboring countries and the EU. A small workshop and a conference on this topic were organized by ASA in 2013. It attracted scientists, experts and policymakers from involved countries and resulted in a project plan to be implemented in 2014-2015.
