International impact-assessment studies
Policy impact assessment studies were carried out for a number of national and international policy relevant institutions such as European Commission, World Bank, and NGOs. One focus of policy impact assessment work was on constructing globally consistent national land use scenarios for EU member states, Brazil and Congo Basin countries, and larger regions such as western and eastern Africa.
Communication to broad public audience
A number of policy-relevant scientific outputs were published reaching a broad public audience. These were covered by the BBC, Economist, and Guardian, with the Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program's slogan “it matters more for the environment and global food security what livestock eats than what humans eat," taking root in the media. The Cropland Capture game designed by ESM was listed among the top 10 education games of 2013.
Outreach and training
Outreach activities through public scientific and public lectures, capacity building through country level trainers using IIASA models, plus advisory positions also contributed to impacts.
