The World Population Program contributes to UNECE report
The report on population trends in the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region was commissioned to supplement government and civil society information with academic research.
The report by POP and the Wittgenstein Centre analyzed recent population trends related to the agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
Thirty-six policy recommendations were made based on four "hot questions":
- Is population aging a threat to UNECE countries?
- Is migration a threat or an opportunity for development?
- Is fertility in the region too low?
- Are UNECE countries becoming less equal societies?
Most of the recommendations are appropriate for all countries in the UNECE region as immediate policy initiatives or future policy goals.
An objective of the report is to improve policymakers' and development practitioners' understanding of emerging population issues and their role in social-economic development. Data collected, analysed and presented in the report (together with the best practices) can be used to support policy development at national and regional level.
