Activities for 2016

In 2016, the Transitions to New Technologies (TNT) Program will focus on three areas: contributing to the new institute-wide and international efforts of The World in 2050 (TWI2050) and Integrated Solutions for Water, Energy, and Land (IS-WEL) projects, and initiating a comprehensive assessment of nexus technologies.

TNT will contribute to TWI2050 through guiding research planning, as well as helping to develop scenario narratives and corresponding inputs for the quantitative and qualitative assessment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the IS-WEL project TNT researchers will aid modeling protocol development, and provide consistency analysis on technological change and innovation dynamics. The program will also assist in the development of a more explicit representation of urbanization and its impact on nexus resources.

Work on a comprehensive technology assessment of nexus technologies will begin in 2016. First, TNT will develop a conceptual framework for a multi-disciplinary assessment of nexus technologies, integrating both innovation systems approaches, technology taxonometric principles, and technology interaction matrices.

Second, the program will undertake a feasibility study investigating whether a range of analytical methods which were developed in a framework of energy and climate-relevant technologies can be transferred to selected nexus technologies. These will include hydraulic technologies, as they are key nodes in the Water-Energy-Land nexus that is at the core of IS-WEL. This feasibility study will test three analytical approaches in particular: scaling analysis, international diffusion, and technology performance and costing studies methods. A comprehensive description of historical technology dynamics that can serve as guide for modeling future trends will also be included.
