Modeling future deforestation trends in the Congo Basin

Results from IIASA's global land use model GLOBIOM model, adapted to the Congo Basin region - the CongoBIOM model - were used to inform a World Bank study on future deforestation trends in the Congo Basin published in 2013.

The policy recommendations derived from the GLOBIOM-based study [1] will potentially help Congo Basin countries overcome some of the more severe trade-offs between growth and forest protection.  

A regional conference was organized in Kinshasa from 15-16 May 2013, chaired by the Minister of Environment of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to widely disseminate the conclusions of the study on future deforestation trends in the country.

The objective of the study was to deepen policymakers’ understanding of the multiple drivers of deforestation in the Congo Basin, and to emphasize the role of sectors such as agriculture, energy, transport, and mining in shaping the future of the Basin.
