Policy and science interface (PSI)

ESM-PSI provides quantitative policy assessments of the climate and land use sector for modelers and policymakers. The group develops methods and tools such as graphical user interfaces (GUIs) between stakeholders and models that enable a transparent and comprehensible review and assessment of results and assumptions. 

Main policy impacts in 2013 were:

Collaboration with Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and the Presidential Working Unit for Supervision and Management of Development (UKP4) to organize with the International Energy Agency (IEA) the second BECCS workshop in August in Jakarta. This workshop focused on BECCS activities and knowledge in Indonesia. An Indonesian BECCS task force was formed to further progress the local BECCS assessment and preparedness.  

The developments and first results of the "recharge.green" project are being closely followed by the different stakeholder groups like the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). They are among several organizations seeking advice from ESM on the development of guidelines and policies for sustainable renewable energy generation.

With ESM's Earth Observation Systems research group, PSI developed a new methodology to support assessment of future forest management certification and policymaking.  Both main certifying schemes - the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) - have contacted ESM with respect to further collaboration on  forest management certification.
