Luis Gomez-Echeverri served on the team responsible for developing the UN Secretary-General’s initiative Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), and getting it under way throughout the developing world. Nebojsa Nakicenovic served on the High-Level Technical Group advising the UN Secretary General on this important initiative. TNT guest scholar Morgan Bazilian also contributed to this initiative through a series of high-level publications.
Luis Gomez-Echeverri also acted as co-Chief Editor and Lead Author of the report “Sustainable and Liveable Cities: Toward Ecological Civilization.” The report, prepared by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is the first to examine the nexus between the economic, social, and environmental challenges and human development. The report provides policy recommendations for China’s management of its urban transformation, both current and future.
Sustainable urban development was also addressed in the new transformation study of the German Advisory Board on Global Change (WBGU), after completion of its study “World in Transition: Governing the Marine Heritage”, co-authored by Nebojsa Nakicenovic, who was also reappointed for a second term to the WGBU board in 2013.
Both the Chinese and the new WBGU study have drawn and will continue to draw on the work on urbanization coordinated by TNT in the Global Energy Assessment and its collaboration with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III (WGIII), where TNT research associate Shobhakar Dhakal serves as Co-covening Lead Author of the chapter on human settlements, and ongoing collaboration with the Global Carbon Project.
