The project will include a methodological and analytical assessment, as well as a policy component. Improvements in existing IIASA models will link traditionally separated resource management models of water, energy, and land use. This will allow rigorous analysis of potential synergies and trade-offs between sectorial management approaches compared to integrated resource management options. The improved models will then be used in a global assessment of nexus resource management “hotspots” under a range of future scenarios and alternative policy regimes.
Lastly, two more in-depth regional analyses will be conducted at a river basin scale in Africa and Asia involving regional stakeholders. These will feed back into the global hotspot assessment and the methodology and modeling component of IS-WEL. The project will also provide strategic insights and improved modeling capabilities to support implementation of several UN Sustainable Development Goals (see TWI2050 Project).
TNT’s Nebojsa Nakicenovic, Luis Gomez Echeverri, and TNT researcher and Energy Program Director Keywan Riahi were key participants in the IS-WEL development process. This research project will be conducted as a new major IIASA-wide cross-cutting research activity and in partnership with the World Bank’s Global Environmental Facility and the UN Industrial Development Organization.
