Guest Emeritus Research Scholar Social Cohesion, Health, and Wellbeing Research Group - Population and Just Societies Program
Landis MacKellar is a senior research scholar in the Social Cohesion, Health, and Wellbeing Research Group of the IIASA Population and Just Societies Program. He is an economist and lawyer whose research and writing have spanned demography, the economics of the social sector, natural resource and environmental economics including climate change, the rule of law, and gender. From 2013-2021, he was editor of Population and Development Review, the leading journal seeking to advance knowledge of the relationships between population and social, economic, and environmental change. He is a former Executive Director of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP, www.iussp.org) and Directeur de recherches at the Institut national d'etudes d'emographiques in Paris.
In his private capacity, MacKellar has been responsible for a range of consultancy projects for clients including the European Commission (EC), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).
A graduate of Oberlin College (BA), The Open University (LLB), and Gould School of Law at the University of Southern California (LLM), MacKellar holds MA (demography) and PhD (regional science) degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He splits his time between New York, Vienna, and Paris.
