Jarmo Kikstra is a research assistant in the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program (ECE). He is part of both the Integrated Assessment and Climate Change (IACC) and the Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions (TISS) research groups.
His research is interdisciplinary, with a main scientific interest in the integrated assessment of scenarios of climate change and the linkages to a broader suite of sustainable development objectives. He is working on the Decent Living Energy Project, which aims to gain insight into the present state of multidimensional poverty from a basic needs perspective, its relation to energy requirements, and the implications for climate mitigation pathways.
Kikstra is currently a PhD candidate at Imperial College London. The title of his thesis is "Safe and Social Living: the individual operating space in the context of Climate Change". He was awarded an MSc degree (2019) in Climate Change from University College London, UK, and holds a BSc degree (2018) in Technology, Liberal Arts, and Sciences from the University of Twente, The Netherlands. His theses were interdisciplinary, with focuses on integrating temperature variability effects into the cost-benefit PAGE2020 climate-economy model, and performing a socio-technical assessment of local climate policy ambitions.
In addition to the above, he participates in efforts to consistently assess the climate implications of emission scenario pathways modeled by integrated assessment models for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and works on assessing the adverse side effects and co-benefits of ambitious climate mitigation.
