In a world flooded with information from a multitude of sources, providing, managing and making sense of knowledge for policy is more important than ever. With scientific controversies, post-fact politics and societal challenges to the use of evidence in public policy, evidence-informed policymaking needs advocates and skilled practitioners, both in scientific and policy bodies.
The Summer School will focus on the theme of migration and demography – specifically the role of population and migration for sustainable development in the European Neighbourhood - a key strategic area for the future of Europe.
Focus and structure of the summer school
The main aim of the school is for scientists and policymakers to learn together how to better use evidence for policy making. A series of high-level panel discussions and special lectures will take place involving leading thinkers and practitioners responsible for producing science and policy around migration, population and demographic changes. Participants will actively engage in masterclasses to learn different skills, namely the provision of evidence in a policy context; using uncertainty; effective communication; modelling; how to reclaim migration discourse from populists; forecasting tools; and using citizen science and big data. The event is held under the auspices of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with the support of the Austrian Ministry for Education, Science and Research and the Austrian Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs.
