On February 8th, 2019 IIASA was invited to participate at the co-organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Russian Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Vienna event on “UNIDO as a global platform for the promotion of women's economic empowerment – Initiatives in Europe and Central Asia”. The meeting was convened to highlight recent activities of UNIDO and brief the audience on near-term plans in the field of women’s economic empowerment. The speakers of Panel included UNIDO Director General Mr. LI Yong; Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation (Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament) Ms. Galina Karelova; Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna Mr. Mikhail Ulyanov; Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Ms. Gulnaz Kadyrova, and UNIDO Goodwill Ambassador Ms. Veronika Peshkova, who shared her personal story on promoting women’s entrepreneurship and leadership.
At the event IIASA was represented by Ms. Amanda Palazzo, Research Scholar and President of IIASA Women in Science Club; Ms. Monika Bauer, Alumni Officer and Vice-President of IIASA Women in Science Club, and Mr. Sergey Sizov, Science Diplomacy Officer. In her address to the audience Ms. Palazzo delivered a message about IIASA activities to help amplify the contributions of women connected to science and spoke about institute’s experience on how to provide professional development opportunities and support for women to navigate their careers.
On the margins of the session Ms. Palazzo spoke with Ms. Galina Karelova and Ms. Veronika Peshkova, who both were very much interested in IIASA Women in Sciences Club experience and expressed strong support for developing cooperation in the sphere of women empowerment.
Diplomatic missions, intergovernmental and civil society organizations, and policymakers took part in this event in the Vienna International Center in order to foster dynamic dialogue on women’s economic empowerment and to accentuate the indispensable role of women in attaining inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
