First BRIDGES meeting was hosted by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. This event launched the work of BRIDGES and was a key set up for determining directions of its future work and development.
It gathered representatives from ten major international research organizations: Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), European Space Agency (ESA), European XFEL GmbH, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Organization, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and Square Kilometre Array Organisation (SKAO).
ICTP Director Fernando Quevedo and IIASA Director General Albert van Jaarsveld opened the meeting with welcoming remarks. They were followed by a discussion on the purpose and role of BRIDGES in the current science diplomacy world framework and by presentations of participants on the work and activities in the science diplomacy sphere performed by their organizations.
First BRIDGES meeting helped to build common interest among the network to cooperate in the science diplomacy sphere in order to share best practices and promote informed decision-making.
