Population Policies and Human Resources in Europe
European populations are ageing and changing. Many European countries including Finland may see their population growth stall and decline in the next decades. Europe has more elderly and fewer children, and the differences between expanding central areas and depopulated regions are rising. At the same time, the composition of populations changes through gender equality, education, and ethnic diversity.
What are the goals and tools of modern population policies? How can we respond, anticipate and proactively mitigate demographic challenges?
The Finnish Government Strategy Department and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis are holding an interactive seminar featuring leading global experts of demographic change and ageing societies on the 26th October 2020, 13.00–16.00.
The agenda for the event features Olli Koski, Chair of the Government Steering Group on Population Policy for the opening remarks. The keynote speakers will be Wolfgang Lutz (IIASA), Elena Rovenskaya (IIASA) and Axel Boersch-Supan (Max Planck Institute). Their talks will be followed by a panel discussion in which the keynote speakers will be joined by Marja Jylhä, Chair of the Scientific Panel on Population Policy, and Anna Rotkirch, the Chief Specialist leading the Population Policy Project. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. The event will be held in English.

IIASA Activities with Finland
In addition to the Arctic Futures Initiative, there are a large number of collaborations between Finland and IIASA including research projects, significant interaction with Finnish policymakers, and growing scientific exchange through people. New projects have included a study of Finland’s resilience to a range of global shocks, structural change in the Finnish economy, and how to make more efficient use of Finland’s bioenergy resources. Interactions have taken place between IIASA researchers and the Prime Minister’s Office, a range of ministries from Defence to the Environment, as well as with Finnish corporations. Knowledge transfer between IIASA and Finland is also facilitated through multiple exchanges with Finnish researchers working at or visiting IIASA, and IIASA researchers visiting and attending events in Finland. The scientific output from all these activities is highly productive with 140 joint publications since 2008.
