The meeting is taking place in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and addresses science diplomacy perspectives in view of some of the most palpable global challenges our societies are coping with. It will not only celebrate the end of the S4D4C project, but will also provide the stage to discuss the legacy of S4D4C and additional outcomes stemming from this European and global discussion around science diplomacy.

Van Jaarsveld spoke at the plenary session “Multilateral Science Diplomacy: the Changing Role of International Organisations in Addressing Global Challenges” at 13:00-14:00 CET on 17 March 2021. He was joined by Lidia Brito, Director of UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean; Mohammed Hassan, President of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS); Thelma Krug, Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC); and James Wilsdon, Professor of Research Policy, Sheffield University, and Vice-Chair of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA). A complex web of organisations plays an increasingly vital role in global governance, scientific advice and multilateral science diplomacy, often framing agendas (such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals) that are then adopted and implemented by national and regional bodies. This session draw on the insights of senior representatives from five leading organisations: UNESCO, TWAS, IPCC, INGSA, and IIASA and took stock of the prospects for multilateral science diplomacy once the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. Panelists considered lessons that can be learned and applied in other areas, such as climate change, education, and resilience.
